Data Privacy Notice

Who are we?

We are the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, part of King’s College London. If you need to contact us about this privacy notice, please write to [email protected]

Why do we process your personal information?

We process your personal information in order to provide access to the READ database.

What is our ‘legal basis for processing’?

Data protection legislation allows us to use your personal information in this way because it is required to deliver an agreement we have with you. You may withdraw your consent at any time by writing to [email protected]

We aim to comply with the following national and international legislation with regards to data protection and user privacy:

This site’s compliance with the above legislation, all of which are stringent in nature, means that this site is likely compliant with the data protection and user privacy legislation set out by many other countries and territories as well. If you are unsure about whether this site is compliant with your own country of residences’ specific data protection and user privacy legislation you should contact our data protection officer (details of whom can be found at the bottom of this page) for clarification.

Do you have to provide your personal information and what are the consequences of not doing so?

You must provide the personal information requested by the registration form. If you do not, you will not be given access to the READ database.

Does READ track visitors to the site?

Like most websites, this site uses Google Analytics (GA) to track user interaction. We use this data to determine the number of people using our site, to better understand how they find and use our web pages and to see their journey through the website.

Although Google Analytics records data such as your geographical location, device, internet browser and operating system, none of this information personally identifies you to us. Google Analytics also records your computer’s IP address which could be used to personally identify you but Google do not grant us access to this. We consider Google to be a third party data processor.

Google Analytics makes use of cookies, details of which can be found on Google’s developer guides. Our website uses the analytics.js implementation of Google Analytics. Disabling cookies on your internet browser will stop Google Analytics from tracking any part of your visit to pages within this website.

How long do we keep your information for?

We will keep your information indefinitely.

Do we share your information with other organisations?

We will not share your information with any external organisations. We do not sell, rent or otherwise distribute your information to any organisations. We sometimes need to share your information with a third party, our website designer. We do this securely and with a data sharing agreement in place. On rare occasions, we may be required or permitted to share personal information by law (e.g for law enforcement purposes).

What are your rights and who can you contact if you have a concern?

To find out more about how the university deals with your personal information, including your rights and who to contact if you have a concern, please see the university’s core privacy notice at https://www.kcl.ac.uk/terms/privacy.aspx

What happens if you contact us using the Contact form?

Should you choose to use the contact form on our Contact Us page, none of the data that you supply will be stored by this website or passed to / be processed by any of the third-party data processors listed below. Instead the data will be collated into an email and sent to us over the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Our SMTP servers are protected by TLS (sometimes known as SSL) meaning that the email content is encrypted using SHA-2, 256-bit cryptography before being sent across the internet. The email content is then decrypted by our local computers and devices.

What do we do with your email address?

If you choose to register for READ, the email address that you submit to us will be forwarded to MailChimp who provide us with email marketing services. We consider MailChimp to be a third-party data processor. The email address that you submit will not be stored within this website’s own database or in any of our internal computer systems.

Your email address will remain within MailChimp’s database for as long as we continue to use MailChimp’s services for email marketing or until you specifically request removal from the list. You can do this by unsubscribing using the unsubscribe links contained in any email newsletters that we send you or by requesting removal via email. When requesting removal via email, please send your email to us using the email account that is subscribed to the mailing list.

While your email address remains within the MailChimp database, you may receive periodic newsletter-style emails from us.

Where is this website’s server located?

This website is hosted by Mayk within a data centre located in the United Kingdom. All traffic (transferral of files) between this website and your browser is encrypted and delivered over HTTPS.
